Getting Started With Afterpay
What is Cross Border Trade?
Cross border trade allows you to shop online from Canada on some Australian, New Zealand, US and UK ONLINE stores with your Afterpay account opened in your home country. Making it easier for you to purchase the things you love overseas from the comfort of your own home.
How does Afterpay work out how much I pay?
Afterpay converts the price of the goods from the retailer’s home currency to your currency so that you can see exactly how much it will cost you upfront. Unlike a lot of other international payment providers, we do not charge any other fees on top of the exchange rate so that you know exactly how much the order will cost before you commit to buy.
I googled the exchange rate and the rate from Afterpay is not the same, why?
- When you google ‘currency conversion’ or ‘fx rates’ online, you typically see a wholesale exchange rate which is the rate at which foreign currency conversions occur for central banks, major financial institutions and large corporations.
- Wholesale exchange rates are generally reserved for institutions who convert billions of dollars annually and is not the rate that a regular customer would receive from a bank or foreign currency company to buy lower value items in a foreign currency.
- Generally, customers will receive what is termed a “retail” exchange rate which is likely to be 3-4% higher than the wholesale exchange rate from a bank and potentially even higher from a foreign currency company.
- The “retail” exchange rate is a competitive retail exchange rate (typically what would be provided by a major bank) and in line with typical credit card and debit card exchange rates. The exchange rate will change regularly to reflect the currency fluctuations in the foreign exchange market.
- No set-up fees, transaction fees or foreign exchange commissions are applied to the exchange rate prior to or after performing the conversion. This ensures that you know exactly what you are paying when the cost of the order is displayed in your home currency during the Afterpay transaction process.
- A benefit of using Afterpay is that the payment taken from your credit or debit card is considered a local transaction. This means that you will not be charged the international card processing fee which is charged on all card transactions by your bank if you were to buy directly from a retailer overseas.
- Because of currency fluctuations in the foreign exchange market, the exchange rate applied will change regularly based on how strong or weak the currency is. To work out what you pay simply take the total order value in the Retailer’s currency and divide by the exchange rate displayed
For example,
- Let’s say the CAD is strong against the AUD and the exchange rate is 0.9090, if you purchased something for $100 CAD, you will have to pay $110 AUD.
- If the CAD is weak against the AUD and the exchange rate is 1.0100, if you purchased something for $100 CAD you will have to pay $99 AUD .
How do I see how much I pay?
- Choose your items and checkout as per usual
- Once you are redirected to Afterpay from the Retailers website you will see the full amount of the purchase in your currency. To work out what you will be charged in your currency, take the amount charged by the retailer in their currency and DIVIDE by the exchange rate displayed to you. There are no additional costs or fees applied to the exchange rate.
- For some merchants, when you checkout in your currency with Afterpay, you will see the same order value during checkout as you had seen on the merchant’s website. Afterpay works with these merchants to sell in your currency so that you aren’t charged any foreign exchange rates.
Does each instalment change based on the exchange rate?
- No, the order total and instalment amounts displayed to you by Afterpay (in your currency) are what you will pay for each instalment. These are fixed and do not change.
What about returns, do I get the same amount back that I paid?
- Yes you do, any refunded amount by the retailer will be converted back at the same exchange rate applied when you placed the original order so you will always end up equal.
Are there any fees?
- There are no fees applied.
- Afterpay simply applies the exchange rate to the cost of the good’s in the merchant’s currency to work out what you will pay in your local currency.
- Late fees may apply to any overdue payments that have not been paid in accordance with your payment schedule

I want to shop - how do I sign up?
You don’t need to register prior to making your first Afterpay purchase.

Once your first order is approved, your Afterpay account is created. All you need to do is visit www.afterpay.com to set up a password, and you will be able to make more purchases using Afterpay by simply entering your log in details upon checkout.
To be eligible to use Afterpay you must:
- be an individual who is at least 18 years old (Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan); 19 for all other provinces
- be a resident of Canada;
- be capable of entering into a legally binding contract;
- have a valid and verifiable email address and mobile telephone number;
- provide a valid delivery address in Canada; and
- be authorised to use the Payment Method provided (Canada-issued Visa / Mastercard / AMEX debit or credit card)
When will my first payment be taken?
We will take the first payment at the time you place an order with us This is usually 25% of the total purchase price.
In all cases you will be notified on screen if the first payment is due at the time of the purchase. We also send you a confirmation email outlining the amounts and dates that the payments are due.
First payment higher than the other three?
For some purchases, if your total order amount exceeds your Afterpay-approved spending limit the first payment may be higher than subsequent payments. Afterpay will show you how the installments are split before you pay.
How does Afterpay work?
Afterpay allows you to shop now and pay later. With Afterpay, your purchase will be split into 4 payments, payable every 2 weeks.
Simply shop with one of your favorite stores found in the Shop Directory and choose Afterpay as your payment method at checkout. First-time customers will need to create an Afterpay account (with instant approval decision) and returning customers will simply log in to make their purchase. For online orders, the goods will be shipped to you by the retailer after checkout. It’s that easy!
At any time, you can log in to your Afterpay account to see your payment schedule and make a payment before the due date. Otherwise we will automatically take the money from your debit or credit card on your payment due dates.
Please Note: Afterpay does not approve 100% of orders. We are committed to ensuring we support responsible spending.
When determining which orders to approve, we consider a number of different factors. As an example, the longer you have been a shopper using Afterpay and the more orders you have successfully repaid, the more likely you will be able to spend more.
Things to consider
- Are there sufficient funds on your card? Generally we look to see the first instalment amount available to spend.
- The length of time you have been using Afterpay
- The amount you have to repay
- The value of the order you are trying to place
- The number of orders you currently have ‘open’ with us
While we know it can be frustrating to not know exactly how much you can spend each time or how many active orders you can have, our rules and approval process help Afterpay responsibly offer our service to customers.
Is Afterpay safe and secure?
At Afterpay our number one priority is the protection of your data.
We have achieved the highest level of payment data security in the world, set by the PCI Global Security Standards Council. This is known in the industry as Data Security Standard Level 1 and applies to all the major payment companies around the world. Achieving this standard includes accreditation to the highest level of:
- Secure Networks and Systems
- Data Protection
- Strong Access Control
- Regular Monitoring and Testing
Our entire business depends on our community trusting us to help them plan, buy and pay – including managing and protecting their data.
This is why at Afterpay, protecting your data is our number one priority.
Returns / Refunds
What should I do if my goods haven't arrived or have arrived damaged?
The delivery and quality of the goods and services you buy is always the responsibility of the merchants and the service providers you buy from. That means you need to get in touch with the merchant if a delivery is taking longer than expected or it arrives with something missing or damaged. It also means that once an order is approved, only the merchant can change that order.
You can normally find a store’s contact details on its website or on the order summary we sent you when you made your purchase. And you should generally allow 48 hours for the store to respond. In the meantime our system will continue to collect your instalments as per our agreement. If you have any questions, please contact us here.
What if I want to return part of my order?
The amount and type of return you can make on a product will always be determined by the returns policy of the individual merchant you bought the item from. You should be able to find out your options by checking their returns policy on their website or by contacting them directly.
Once a refund has been processed by the merchant it will automatically come through to us and will show up in your payment plan.
What happens to my payments when I refund an order?
Your payments will be adjusted from the fourth payment backwards, this sounds scary and confusing but let’s break it down!
Full Refunds
If you have returned an order in its entirety and the full amount of the order is refunded, any upcoming payments will be cancelled out and any paid payments will be refunded back to the card you paid on.
Partial Refunds
Ok, this is where it gets a little more complicated, take a look at this example:
Payment schedule when the order was placed:
Order #123456 | $100.00 | Payment Status |
First Payment | $25.00 | PAID |
Second Payment | $25.00 | Due in 2 weeks |
Third Payment | $25.00 | Due in 4 weeks |
Fourth Payment | $25.00 | Due in 6 weeks |
The order total was $100 & a refund of $80 was processed.
When the refund was processed by the merchant, the first payment (of $25) had been paid, however, the second, third & fourth were unpaid as they weren’t due yet.
Payment schedule when the refund was processed:
Order #123456 | $100.00 | Payment Status |
First Payment | $25.00 | Adjusted to $20 Refund back to card $5 |
Second Payment | $25.00 | Cancelled |
Third Payment | $25.00 | Cancelled |
Fourth Payment | $25.00 | Cancelled |
The first payment adjusted to $20, however, $25 had already been paid, so the difference (being $5) was refunded back to the card the payment was paid on.
Financial refunds can take up to 7 business days depending on your financial institution. If you have any questions you should follow up with them asap.
Why am I still being charged when I have returned the goods?
First things first – once you have returned your goods we need the merchant to accept the refund and let us know. They won’t refund Afterpay unless they are satisfied that the goods have been returned in a manner consistent with their returns and refunds policy. So we have to wait for this to happen before we can settle your account – otherwise Afterpay would be left carrying the cost of any disputed returns.
We work with all our amazing merchant and service providers to try and make sure this process happens as quickly as possible – because that’s good for you. But we can’t control this and so we have to wait for our merchants to go through their proper process.
That means our agreement with you – your short instalment plan – has to continue until we get final confirmation of a return or refund from your merchant and our systems process your refund in the amount agreed between you and the merchant.
And if you need help resolving a returns dispute with a merchant because you’re unable to resolve the dispute directly with them, please get in touch with us here and let us know what’s happening.
Payments
Can I change the date a payment is due?
Great news! You can now change the due date of a payment yourself via our mobile app or website! It’s pretty straight forward.
Mobile App
- Navigate to the Orders tab in the Afterpay app
- Select the scheduled payment you would like to reschedule
- Select the menu in the top right corner of the app and choose Change Next Payment Date
- Indicate the date to which you’d like to reschedule your next payment and confirm
Web Portal
- Go to ‘Payment Schedule’
- Click ‘View Order’ on the payment/order you’d like to move
- Click ‘Change Next Payment Date’ (this button is next to the ‘make a payment’ option)
- Select your new date & click ‘Confirm Date’
Having Troubles?
Ok, so this doesn’t solve for every situation, if the option is not available you will see a message on screen like this “Uh oh! This payment date can’t be changed”
Reasons why:
- We have some purchases that we are unable to move the move payment date for, if you try on one of those purchases you will see this error message.
- You can only move one payment per order, if you need more help please send us a message via the mobile app
- You will not be able to reschedule the first or last payments via this self-service feature, if you require help with this please send us a message via the mobile app
- If a payment is already overdue or due within the next 24 hours we cannot move the payment (neither our team or using the self-service feature), once we get within 24 hours of the due date it is too late to change the automation
- Brand new customers (less than 42 days since your first purchase) will not be able to use this feature
- If you are already under a hardship repayment arrangement with us you will not have this feature
Got feedback on how our product works? Get in touch with us via your mobile app let us know what you think about the self-service ‘change next payment date’ feature.
Can I pay less than the full installment amount?
Yes you can!
Via the app:
1. Open the order
2. Tap ‘Make a Payment’
3. Tap ‘Or make a custom payment’
4. Enter the amount you’d like to pay
Via the Website:
1. Login to your account via www.afterpay.com
2. Click on Payments Schedule
3. Click on view order
4. Click on the new button ‘Make a payment’ just under the order summary
5. A new screen opens up – you can key in the amount you wish to repay – this can be all or part of the instalment or the whole remaining order amount if you wish. The Payment Schedule will be adjusted to show what you have paid.
This is really handy if you have just been paid but couldn’t afford to pay both instalments in one go. So you can choose to pay more or less than the full instalment amount, giving you more flexibility. When the next due date comes along we will only collect whatever amount is still owing.
What happens if my card is lost / stolen or cancelled by the bank?
If you have a payment due with us we can take it from any alternative cards stored on your account. If your lost or stolen card is the only one on our system but you do have another card, you can add this extra card to the system and we can take your payment from that one.
You can update your payment details in the App or online by logging onto “my account” and then “add payment method” in the “billing” section.
You can select “preferred card” if you want to use this one for future transactions. Alternatively, you can click PAY NOW and use this card as a once off – just remember to unclick “store for future payments”.
Once you have found your card again or received a new one, you can update the details of your preferred card in your account via the App or website, by following the instructions above.
Don’t have another way to pay?
You can report your card is cancelled/lost or stolen with us here
Note: Card cancellation request can be only requested once a year
How do payments work?
WHICH CARDS DOES AFTERPAY ACCEPT?
We accept domestic Visa, Mastercard, and AMEX debit and credit cards, we do not accept cards issued from overseas banks or Interac cards. If you use your card with us you will still be subject to your card issuer’s terms and conditions including any applicable finance charges and fees that may apply. When you use your card you may not receive certain rewards, features and benefits that may be offered for example, additional points or cash back. For more information please contact your card issuer.
HOW CAN I PAY?
There are two basic ways to pay with cards:
The most convenient is our automatic payments system. Just go on online and enter the details of your preferred payment card under “Add a payment method” in the “Billings” section of “My Account”
When you have an instalment due, we will notify you beforehand so that way you can make sure that there is enough in your account for that instalment. We do the rest.
Alternatively, you can always make payments on time or early by selecting the PAY NOW button in your account. You can then enter your card details manually. If you want to make this your preferred payment method, select “Store my card”, otherwise make sure to untick this option before logging out.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I CAN’T MAKE A PAYMENT
Afterpay is committed to making sure you stick to your Payment Schedule.
That’s why we consider every purchase application before we approve that purchase, why we are always sending you reminders when a payment is almost due.
If you are facing financial hardship, we have hardship policy that allows us to work with you to get you back on track.
As soon as you miss a payment, we will immediately stop you from making any further purchases with Afterpay. This is because of our commitment to the high standards we set ourselves for responsible spending.
Does Afterpay have an automatic payment system?
To make it easy for you to stick to your payment plan, Afterpay provides automatic payments.
This means on the due date, we take your next instalment from the original card used when you placed your order. We will always send you reminders before an instalment is due, so you just need to make sure that there is enough in your account for that instalment and we do the rest.
If a payment fails, we will try other cards on your account. If you do not want the other card to be charged, we do recommend removing it as soon as possible.
If you’re worried you won’t be able to make a payment, please get in touch and we will try to sort something out. Our system reviews your repayment history for future purchases, so we encourage you to pay as soon as possible.
Alternatively, you can always make payments manually on time or early – by clicking on the PAY NOW button in your account.
What do I do if the automatic payment fails?
We will send you an SMS and email letting you know an automatic payment has failed.
To make an overdue payment you can log in online and click PAY NOW next to your “overdue payment” in your “payment schedule” – just follow the prompts.
If you’re worried you won’t be able to make a payment, contact us ASAP and we’ll try and sort something out.
Difficulty paying on time or facing financial hardship?
We’ve worked hard to develop a Hardship Policy that lets us work together if you have trouble making repayments.
Based on your unique circumstances, we have options we can consider to get you back on track and back in control of your money. Whether this means we stick to your current installment plan but keep talking, or we come up with a new payment plan that reflects your circumstances – we have options we can discuss together.
So if you are facing missed payments for a number of reasons – from natural disaster to unemployment to domestic violence – make sure you reach out. Together we will come up with a plan to get you back on track.
Your first step is to contact us. No matter how much you owe, our hardship policy is available to every Afterpay community member.
Managing Orders
Why is my order being declined?
We offer simple instalment plans for online shoppers, allowing a purchase to be paid for in four instalments, due every 2 weeks.
Simply shop with one of your favourite stores found in the Shop Directory and choose Afterpay as your payment method at checkout. First-time shoppers provide payment details as usual, returning shoppers simply log in to make their purchase. It’s that easy!
After you check out, the goods will be shipped to you by the merchant. At any time, you can log in to your Afterpay account to see your Payment Schedule and make a payment before the due date. Otherwise we will automatically debit the money from your debit or credit card on the payment due date.
Please Note:
Afterpay does not approve 100% of orders. We are committed to ensuring we support responsible spending.
When determining which orders to approve, we consider a number of different factors. As an example, the longer you have been a shopper with Afterpay and the more orders you have successfully repaid, the more likely you will be able to spend more.
Things to consider:
– are there sufficient funds on your card (generally we look to see the first instalment amount of the order value available to spend on the card you are using)
– length of time you have been using Afterpay (tighter in the first 6 weeks)
– amount you have to repay, it may help to pay some off (not a guarantee)
– the value of the order you are trying to place, it may help to reduce the value of your shopping cart (not a guarantee)
– the number of orders you currently have ‘open’ with us (not a guarantee)
How much can I spend with Afterpay?
You will be shown an estimated amount you can spend when you log into your account or app. The amount you can spend using Afterpay generally changes based on how you use your account. We know that being aware of factors that influence your available spending can help you stay in control of your finances, so we’ve broken down some of those factors below:
Making payments on time
Your Afterpay payment history is an important factor that affects how much you can spend with your account. Here are a few things to look out for that may impact your available spending:
- Tenure since first order
- The frequency of orders made
- Payment source
- On time payments made
- The frequency of on time payments made
- Late payments
- The frequency of late payments
- How late a payment was made
- How often orders get declined due to insufficient funds on the payment method on-file
Just as there are things that might decrease the amount you can spend, good spending behaviour like making payments on time might increase what you can spend with your account.
We’re committed to making sure that our community feels empowered and in control of their finances, so if you’re facing financial hardship and are unable to make payments, contact us to ask about how we might be able to help.
Here are some further insights on how your actions impact your spending limit.
We value loyalty and on time payments
If you’re a new Afterpay user, the amount you can spend will be lower than if you’ve been responsibly using the platform for a long time. Typically, the longer you’ve been using your account—and have made payments on time—the more likely the amount you can spend will increase.
Avoid declined purchases based on insufficient funds
Avoiding declined purchases is one way to help increase the amount you can spend with us in the future. To do this, check your account before making purchases to find out what you have available to spend. You should also make sure that the card you’re going to pay with has enough funds to cover the 1st payment.
Non Receipt Of Goods
For non receipt of goods, we recommend you always reach out to the merchant /seller first to find out what has happened and request tracking information. Always allow up to 7 days for the merchant to respond to your enquiry.
If you are not able to get a response from the merchant you can get in touch with us directly to raise a non receipt of goods claim.
How many orders can I have with Afterpay?
Afterpay promotes responsible spending because anything else is bad for you, bad for our merchant partners and bad for Afterpay. As we learn more about each other we can work together to help you plan, buy and pay for more of things you need.
If you are brand new to Afterpay and trying to use our service multiple times you will be declined. your spending limit will be tailored to your history with Afterpay.
This way you stay in control of your money and we can make sure that you really commit to our community of responsible spenders.
The longer you are with us, spending responsibly and making payments on time, your spending limits will likely increase and you will hopefully be able to carry out more orders at one time.
Why haven't I received my goods yet?
We get it, waiting for a delivery sucks!
That said, we do not have any influence over the delivery timeframe of your purchase. Many retailers will provide tracking information online for you to keep checking. Alternatively give the merchant a call or drop them a line contact details are usually found on their website.

Why pay by installments?
